If your business is still using a traditional landline, this is one of those things that’s easy to park in the “we’ll deal with that later” category.

Until it suddenly isn’t.

Because whether it’s been on your radar or not, the UK is in the middle of switching off the old phone network. Properly switching it off. And by 2027, the traditional copper-based landlines (PSTN and ISDN) simply won’t be supported anymore.

So if your business is still running on them, this isn’t a case of “they’ll slowly get a bit worse over time”… they’ll just stop working.

Now, that probably sounds a bit dramatic — and in reality, it doesn’t need to be.

The problem we see most often isn’t the change itself. It’s the timing.

Because as soon as something becomes urgent, everything speeds up. Decisions get rushed. People end up trying to understand systems they’ve never really had to think about before. And there’s always that worry of “we just need to pick something and hope it doesn’t cause disruption.”

That’s usually where the stress comes in.

The good news is, what’s replacing traditional landlines isn’t complicated or risky. It’s just a newer way of doing the same job. Instead of running over old copper phone lines, your calls run over your internet connection.

You’ll hear it called VoIP, but in simple terms, it’s still just people calling your business like they always have.

The difference is, it tends to work a lot better.

You’re no longer tied to a building. Calls can be routed more intelligently. People can answer from wherever they’re working. And you get a lot more visibility over what’s actually happening, rather than everything sitting quietly in the background until something goes wrong.

And that’s really the point of this change. It’s not about forcing businesses into something new for the sake of it — it’s about finally moving onto something that fits the way businesses already operate now.

Most of the business owners we speak to aren’t entirely sure what they’re currently on, and that’s completely normal. Phone systems aren’t something you tend to think about until they stop working.

But with the 2027 switch-off approaching, it does make sense to understand where you stand now, rather than later when it becomes urgent.

Because once you do look at it, the next step is usually far simpler than people expect.
